2009-2010 Pandemic A(H1N1)v
As of the 11th June 2009 WHO declared a full Pandemic the first of its kind in
over 40 Years. It is expected that Phase 6 could last for up to 18 months during which time European countries will need to implement their response plans as they become
"affected"
that is start experiencing community transmission.
There are still a number of uncertainties about this pandemic that will need
to be addressed in the coming months. These include how the severity of the
disease and the risk groups for most severe manifestations will appear in
Europe. It remains to be seen whether the virus remains sensitive to anti-viral
drugs, and especially whether co-circulation of the new virus and existing
seasonal influenza strains and A(H5N1) will result in any genetic recombination.

31 August 2009. WHO States A(H1N1)v Flu Spreading at "Unbelievable" Speed, With 2,180 Fatal Cases.
In an interview in France on Saturday, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued another warning that the A/H1N1 flu is spreading at an "unbelievable" speed, with "a very severe form of illness" affecting the lungs of healthy young people.
Director-general of the WHO Margaret Chan said that sixty percent of the fatalities had underlying health issues, while the remaining 40 percent of the fatal cases were young adults in good health who succumbed to a vital fever spanning five to seven days.
Chan emphasized that the most worrying fact is that up to 30 percent of people in densely populated nations are at risk of contracting the new flu virus.
The UN agency had earlier declared in a statement that the A/H1N1 virus is currently the dominant influenza strain across the globe.
Based on the latest WHO report, the A/H1N1 flu has already claimed over 2,180 lives around the world

report:
Globally, we believe that we are at Phase 5 but are getting closer to Phase 6 and this is
based on the following assessment: it is clear that the virus continues to spread
internationally, we know that there are a number of countries who appear to be in transition
moving from travel-related cases to more established community types of spread. Some of
these countries are the countries that you have been following for quite a while, but they
include countries such as the UK and Spain in Europe, Japan in Asia, Chile in South

spread community activity in these countries. I think it is fair to say that they are in
transition and are not quite there yet, which is why we are not in Phase 6 yet.
